DYED IN THE WOOL
RHP Jonathan Papelbon blew his second straight
save Friday night in Minnesota. Papelbon has allowed 5
hits and 4 runs over his last 2.1 IP. The Sox finisher
has made 4 appearances in the last 6 games,
throwing 3.2 innings. Did Terry Francona really need to
bring him in for 2 late appearances on consecutive
nights  (2.1 IP/0 H/0 R) earlier in the week, to protect 4
and 3 run leads against Tampa Bay and Detroit
respectively?? RHP Josh Beckett recorded his 1,000
strikeout Thursday night in Detroit. In his last 4 starts
Beckett has gone at least 7 innings with a 2.61 ERA.
RHP Clay Buchholz is 4-0 at Fenway following his win
last Friday night against Tampa Bay. The rookie hurler
has posted a 1.39 ERA in 32.1 career innings pitched
at the Friendly Confines. RHP Curt Schilling (right
shoulder) threw 25 times from 60 feet Tuesday at
Comerica Park with no discomfort, and had another
pain-free 25-pitch side-session from flat ground
Thursday. The veteran will throw again this weekend
in Minnesota. Bartolo Colon (right oblique) threw 2
(pain-free) scoreless innings Monday afternoon in an
extended spring training game in Sarasota, hitting 93
on the radar gun. The veteran is now scheduled to join
the Pawtucket rotation, possibly this weekend against
the Norfolk Tides at McCoy Stadium. Colon bypassed
his May 1st opt-out clause after he and the club
reached an agreement to keep him in a Sox uniform.
The Cubs and White Sox are reportedly the most
interested in OF Coco Crisp. However, the Sox will
most likely take Crisp off the trade market with
Drew's on again/ off-again back issues, OF Brandon
Moss' appendectomy surgery, and OF Bobby Kielty's
recent surgery for a bone-spur in his left hand. Kielty
is expected to miss 4-6 weeks after being placed on
the AAA DL April 19th.

DICE-K LEADS SOX TO 5-2 WIN
Blue Train Jam Session
With origins dating back to at least 1885, the Cape Cod
Baseball League has been able to carve a unique and
colorful niche for itself in American Baseball culture.
Bringing in top collegiate talent from around the country
to participate in a wooden bat league has proven to be
an excellent training ground for prospective Major
Leaguers (1 of every 7 current Major Leaguers played in
the CCBL). When you combine that with the flavor of
small town Baseball, where the players work and live in
the town, it revives memories of the early Minor
Leagues, when the communities were enmeshed with
their teams in a way  that you normally don't see today.
Cape fans, all fans grab hard to that ideal. The reality is
that other amateur leagues (11 NCAA sanctioned
summer leagues) around the country are competing for
the top college players; and when you combine that with
the financial demands of running a season- financing
publications, administration, game personnel and
equipment (over$500,000) in addition to the respective
clubs ($100,000-300,000 per team) while grants
(Yawkey Foundation over $1,200,000 in four years) and
donations help,  you stare at the inevitable entrance of
corporate sponsorships. Which brings us back to that
'ideal' that some feel is dissipating with outfield wall ads
and corporate logos. I would argue that the Cape League
has done a strong job of maintaining the atmosphere
that brings so many  to league games, while bringing in
the financial resources to maintain status as the top
summer league in the country. While upgrading over half
of the leagues fields, the CCBL has brought in
NESN,
ESPN
and other top-flight media to broadcast league
contests; at a time when other summer leagues and
more stringent NCAA eligibility standards are making
competition for top players more demanding. It is not an
easy juggling act; from league brass to volunteers, the
CCBL has continued to provide the best summer
amateur baseball action in the country, with the
community charm that is so unique to Cape Cod.
