MIAA REALIGNMENT ENDORSED
The MIAA again addressed the issue of playoff participation
(only 18% of EMass schools have the opportunity to make
football playoffs) when the tournament committee voted to
endorse a revised EMass football realignment proposal for
2011. The proposal would accept a three-league split
(Hockomock/Middlesex/Tri-Valley) with each league
receiving a second playoff spot-increasing the post-season
field from 31 schools to 34. Another division would have to
be added as a result of the splits. The result would be eight
four-league divisions playing their semi-finals on the
Tuesday following Thanksgiving, with Super Bowl(s) on the
following Saturday.

CAPE LEAGUE PERSPECTIVE
The 2010 Cape Cod Baseball League season recently
wrapped up at Red Wilson Field in Yarmouth. It was a nice
punctuation to a wonderful summer, from great weather to
great baseball to great stories about players from Hawaii to
Texas to West Point. Attending a Cape League game is an
invitation to be presented with opportunities to take mental
snapshots of the diverse crowd, the fan passion and those
'little' moments, whether teaching a son or daughter how to
score a game or helping tackle the condiments. When
Anthony Ranaudo left the Brewster Whitecaps after his
impressive 5-game audition to strengthen his Major League
bargaining position, it was a splash -in-the-face reminder to
me about what the league can be about. My rose-tinted
sunglasses lost their luster for a while. I was ticked off at
Ranaudo in particular, and the Cape League in general.
Mercenaries, I thought. No joy, no fun. A cold-blooded
business with 'advisors' whispering in the wings. Then I
walked on the turf at Red Wilson Field to capture images of
the Cotuit Kettleers celebrating their championship. And I
didn't see cold-blooded mercenaries, I saw 19 and 20-year
olds hugging and jumping up and down enjoying their moment,
a host-family's moment . . Cotuit's moment. It was a
rejuvenating feeling. And after wrapping up my duties, I
walked back to my parking spot an hour after the final out,
and noticed three people standing by a car loaded with
baseball gear and suitcases. One of the Cotuit pitchers was
saying good-bye to his host family. It was a touching,
emotional moment. I felt guilty taking it in. But I felt a sense of
gratitude for witnessing it.
